The
Transport Department has implemented schemes like
capital contribution to Meghalaya Transport Corporation,
Assistance to Motor Driving Schools, Financial
Assistance to Schedule Caste/ Schedule Tribe,
Construction of Joint Check Gates, Computerisation of
the office of the District Transport Officers,
Construction of Umroi and Baljek Airports which may be
briefly described as follows:
Capital
contribution to Meghalaya Transport Corporation
The
capital contribution is given by the State Government to
the Corporation to acquire and build up its capital
assets like land and building, buses and trucks, tools,
plants and machinery for maintenance of its fleet of
vehicles, and ensure smooth running and operation of
Transport Services by the Corporation. The allocation of
fund for this scheme is provided by the State Government
and released to the Corporation.
Motor
Driving School
This
scheme is implemented in order to impart driving skill
to youth in all categories of vehicles. The Department
is running the driving schools, each at Shillong, Jowai
and Tura. The duration of the course is six months and
the rules are as per syllabus prescribed under the Motor
Vehicles Act, 1988.
Financial
Assistance to Schedule Caste/ Schedule Tribe
The
scheme has been implemented to provide financial
assistance to unemployed youth belonging to Schedule
Caste / Schedule Tribe for purchase of Commercial
Vehicles.
Construction
of Joint Check Gates
The
Transport Department has taken up joint inspection for
land acquisition for construction of joint check gates.
The scheme has been taken up in order to check
Commercial Vehicles plying on the road especially
National Highways without weightment or permits or in
contravention of Motor Vehicle Rules.
Computerisation
of the office of the District Transport Officers
The
Department has planned to computerise all the offices of
the Department in a phased manner for giving a quick and
efficient service to the people.
Construction
of Airports
The
construction of STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) at
Baljek near Tura in West Garo Hills has already been
completed with a view to provide air link services to
Garo Hills Districts with the State Capital and the rest
of the Country.
Pollution
Testing and Control
The
Transport Department in collaboration with Pollution
Control Board in checking smokes emission by both diesel
and petrol driven vehicles on the road. This scheme is
designed by the Central Government and as specified
under Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and Central Motor
Vehicles Rules, 1989.
Apart
of the above, the Transport Department has introduced
the Helicopter Service from February 1999. The Central
Government is providing a subsidy of 75% for operation
of the services.
