The Transport Department primarily deals with matters related to road transport in Meghalaya. The Department administers the Motor Vehicles Taxation Act and the rules framed thereunder. It also controls, supervises, and regulates the functioning of various transport authorities under its jurisdiction, including the State Transport Authority and the Regional Transport Authorities. In addition, the Department oversees the Meghalaya Transport Corporation, which was constituted under the Road Transport Corporations Act, 1950, to support and strengthen public transport services in the state.
