The transition to electric mobility is one of the most significant steps toward a cleaner and more sustainable future. According to FAME India (www.fame-india.gov.in), as of 31st October 2020, over 2.8 lakh electric vehicles (EVs) had been sold across India — helping save 73.8 million litres of fuel and reducing 183.58 million kilograms of CO₂ emissions nationwide.
In Meghalaya, even with an early adoption of just six EVs, the State has already contributed to saving 1,568 litres of fuel and reducing 3,901 kilograms of COâ‚‚. Recognizing the environmental and economic potential of EVs, the Government of Meghalaya has set an ambitious target to ensure at least 15% of all vehicles are electric within the next five years.
Under the Meghalaya Electric Vehicle Policy 2021, the Government aims to facilitate the adoption of approximately 20,000 EVs during the policy period. This initiative is projected to save around 50 lakh litres of fuel annually and reduce over 36 lakh kilograms of CO2 emissions each year.
Through this policy, Meghalaya reaffirms its commitment to building a clean, green, and energy-secure future—one that not only protects the environment but also drives sustainable economic growth and innovation in the transport sector.
